The upstream oil & gas sector emits around 1.6 giga-tonnes equivalent CO2 annually, with power generation, flaring and venting the largest contributors.
BW Offshore’s low-emission FPSOs facilitate sustainable operations by applying best practices including combined cycle power generation (CCGT), closed flare systems, hydrocarbon blanketing with vapor recovery and thermal oxidizer systems.
CCGT achieves 20% fuel consumption savings and emissions reductions (e.g. >110,000 tonnes CO2e/year for a typical large FPSO with 150 MW generation). Also, emissions from inert gas venting (typically around 1.5 tonnes CO2e/1,000bbls crude produced, are eliminated by hydrocarbon blanket and closed flare/vapour recovery systems. Where acid gas removal units are required to process high CO2 reservoir gases, addition of thermal oxidiser technology reduces equivalent CO2 emissions by more than 40%.
