Organic matter on vessel hulls (biofouling) creates increased drag on otherwise smooth surfaces, leading to loss of speed and decreased fuel efficiency. This results in greater fuel consumption, higher operational costs and increased emissions.
Studies also show that biofouling is the top contributor to invasive species transportation in the marine environment. Also, conventional diver-conveyed cleaning operations present a safety risk, in addition to chemicals and microplastics being released during every operation. This is already limiting access to cleaning in ports worldwide due to restrictions on releasing these contaminants into the local marine environment.
ECOsubsea are the leading provider of environmentally friendly in-water hull cleaning services to the worldwide shipping industry and have also developed solutions for efficient cleaning of heavy fouling on rigs and drillships. Their patented “soft jet” technology is the solution that cuts operational costs, carbon emissions and stop the spread of alien invasive species.
Each year about 5 million kg of biofouling is carried on vessel hulls. Studies show that with this removed, the world fleet could reduce both costs and emissions by up to 15-20% (0,5% of total global emission), whilst drastically reducing transportation of invasive species.
