During offshore oil production a massive amount of seawater is pumped at high energy costs from the sea to deck level for cooling purposes Once it has served its purpose, the water is dumped back into the sea, and substantial energy goes to waste.
By installing a submerged turbine in the overboard dump line, the residual pressure and static head can be used to generate electric power to regain energy. This generated power will contribute to the total power supply of the facility, reducing gas consumption and GHG emissions for power generation.
The Framo Submerged Turbine may regain as much as 35 – 40% of the energy used to lift the water to deck, which for a typical installation may amount to 0.5 – 1.5 MW.
Identified as a Lower Emissions Oil and Gas Solution (LEOG).
